Hi.. I'm Machine, the SysOp here. I just thought I'd leave you
this bit of mail so, if nothing else, you could find out that private
messages can be left here.
If you'd be so kind, please send me a reply, letting me know a
little bit about yourself (you don't HAVE to, just something that'd be
nice). If you want to know a little more about me, type:
".Meet-user MACHINE"
and you'll get a little information about me. You can also send me mail
(grin).
In case you didn't notice, the board asked you to type:
".Help POLICY"
when you first logged in. If you do this, you'll get a pretty good
idea of my philosophy of being a Sysop, and get an idea of what I'm
hoping to do with this BBS. However, in case you DIDN'T do that:
I regard myself as an artist. I write music. I strongly believe
in freedom of expression, so I don't really care what you say, or how
you say it, on this BBS. However, I would really like it if people
would keep anything they write confined to the proper message areas
(called "rooms" on this system).
For example, please do not try to discuss abortion in the MIDI
room.. it's just a little distracting <grin>. Not to mention weird.
This system is very odd; chances are this BBS is totally different
from anything you've ever used in your life. But don't despair, it IS
possible to understand Citadel.
The first thing to learn is the dot commands. If you type "?" at
the room prompt (when you first log in, it's the thing that says "CPU>",
although it could be the name of any room you happen to be in) you'll
get a real simple menu. This menu doesn't begin to cover all the things
that are possible with this system. If you type ".Help DOT" as the menu
suggests, you'll get information regarding the extended commands of this
system.
If you'd like to see ALL the commands this system is capable, you
can type ".Help SUMMARY". I'd really suggest you check this file
carefully.. I STILL use this file when I'm trying to remember one of the
really obscure commands on this system.
Another note: if you want to pause the text you're reading, type
"P" while the message is scrolling. Type "S" to stop it entirely, and
"N" will go on to the next message. "J" will Jump to the next paragraph
of a message. You can type any key to unpause a message.
That's it for me... take care, and I hope to catch you later.
